Emily Pavacic

My work explores narratives about personal beliefs and experiences, as well as universality within the human experience. I seek to create self-reflective work about contemplation, struggle, the attempt to heal oneself, and times of celebration. My pieces consist of labor-intensive, hand-stitched drawings on textiles which frequently incorporate the use of paint and multiple layers of fabric. My years as a dancer inform my understanding of the expressiveness of the human form and the power of gesture.

The search for materials often plays an imperative role in my artistic process. I scour thrift stores and antique shops for torn and stained linens such as doilies. On these cloth items, which overtly possess a past, I impose my own history through the use of embroidery.
