Artist Statement:
Images from memory, daily life and dreams jostle together into somewhat cryptic stories that I order through the use of color, light and composition. I’ve always had interior, idiosyncratic stories haunting me. I paint them to see and then exorcise them. I feel like a magician creating an illusion of space using the physicality of paint as it shifts from warm to cool, from smooth to textured. Imagery unfolds as I paint. I am in love with paint and the world that comes to me through paint.
When drawing large scale I start with drawing materials taped to all ten fingers and use my whole body in the drawing process. The process is reminiscent of running hands over an ouija board. Mostly larger-than-life figures ensue. At home, I have a nightly drawing practice. Figures visit me. They come in a variety of forms - some are skeletons, some made up of waves of flesh. I imagine the body’s feeling of agency and it’s response to gravity. In childhood, I was left alone for long periods of time and found comfort drawing figures. They keep me company.
